I had a couple of nice gigs last week and would like to thanks a couple of people. Last Thursday I played a solo sax gig in Louisville, KY at the downtown Mariott for the United States Equestrian Federation. Thanks Ilse Dehner for the calling me to play. It's always nice to visit one of my favorite cities, if only for a few hours. Secondly, thanks Jim Connerley for the great gig at the Blue Wisp Jazz Club last Friday. It was a slammin' night playing with the Vintage Keys Project.

Today I had a good practice session working on tunes, patterns, etc. My chops felt strong, mostly because I rested them on Sunday. I worked on the flute Sunday. I had two fun gigs at Terry's Turf Club last Friday and Saturday with Eric Campbell, Steve Schmidt, and others. It was intense playing, like a couple of good workouts at a gym. And I am thankful because I felt strong today practicing. I played Soprano sax on Friday and Tenor/Sop. on Saturday. I always feel much better with my playing whe… Continue

Today was lot of fun because of a nice rehearsal with Jim Connerley's Vintage Keys Ensemble with John Zappa, Bill Jackson and Tony Franklin. We are getting ready for our gig at the Blue Wisp next Friday January 12th. We worked on songs like Joe Henderson's Carribean Fire Dance, Woody Shaw's Katrina Ballerina, Freddie Hubbard's The Intrepid Fox, etc. There's nothing like play great music with people that you enjoy being around. These guys are good friends and great musicians. There was no drama,… Continue
This is wintertime, right? It's supposed to be cold with snow. So this is what is so funny about living in the Midwest. There are too many people freaking out about the upcoming so-called blizzard. It's just snow! Is it human nature to worry about weather? Are we "hard-wired" to help prepare for the worst? I enjoy the wintertime. But not the annual wintertime weather conversation. So if you see me, let's not talk about the "blizzard".
Today it was soprano sax day. I've always had a love/hate re… Continue

After too many suggestions from my wife Vanessa post a daily blog, I'm going to give a serious try. I guess if I make a habit of writing every evening, I will condition myself. I've always been a routine type of guy.
Let's see..... I've had two solid days of practicing my tenor. So my overall spirits are brighter. The holidays alway make it difficult to keep my chops in happy. I worked on my usual scale reps and rememorised some songs that I have'nt played in a while like: Harlem Nocturne, Hell… Continue

Hello Everyone,
It has been a while since I have written in my blog, however I have have been busy.
The main thing taking my time these days is my newest CD project, which I believe will be titled Lightwave. I was in the studio the 3rd and 4th of September with Dan Karlsburg, Steve Whipple and Anthony "T" Lee and have since been working on mixing the tracks. All the guys did such a great job and I am glad that I got to get these "young lions" recording my tunes.
Over the past few years… Continue
I had a wonderful time this past weekend playing with Dan, Steve and Tony. I felt a wonderful connection with them the whole night. I do plan to offer up a few of the tunes from the night on the next Rewind, which should be out sometime in the next week or so.
Thanks to everyone who came out. Continue

I had a great time this week and felt like a real jazz musician. All in all I had 4 jazz gigs, which for a horn player is a fantastic week. Thursday was very fun. If you weren't there, you can check out the most current rewind to check out a few of the tunes we played. We are figuring out the Zoom recorder and this recording is the best we have gotten so far. :)
Friday and Saturday were also fun. I had a wonderful time making music with Steve. He is a very gifted young bass player and a treat t… Continue

For those of you who didn't notice them missing, I would like to let you all know that the Buffalo Wings and Rings gig is no more. It was a good run, but alas not meant to be.
On to brighter things. I am very excited about my trio gig and the Blue Wisp Jazz Club, this Thursday. Ah the Wisp, on of the last hold outs for jazz seven nights a week in our fair city of Cincinnati. Cincinnati jazz, is a wonderful, but increasingly rare animal these days. I always enjoy playing at the Wisp and I know i… Continue

I have been playing my new Sunday Jazz gig at BWRs for about 5 weeks now. It has been going well and I have been enjoying making music with some wonderful musicians. The time has been move up to the afternoon from 2:00 to 5:00. I sent out an email to those of you on my local list.
This past weekend I played with Jim Anderson and Art Gore which is always a great time. I had a pleasant surprise when some of my former students come out. Thanks guys! It meant a lot to have you take the time to come… Continue

It's Thursday, my day off and therefor the day that I hope to accomplish more things in my practice. I have the house to myself, save the cats. They are too busy practicing crazy ninja moves to bother me, that and they are upstairs and the door is closed.
I played this past weekend with the KSO (Kentucky Symphony Orchestra). They had Over the Rhine as their guests and it was a great show. I have worked with OtR before and as always, they are wonderfully professional. Karin has a beautiful voice… Continue

Hello all,
I just wanted to take a moment to shamelessly plug Brent's new Sunday gig at the Buffalo Wings and Rings. It is a rare thing these days to have a steady Jazz gig, and this venue would like to gear itself to have just that. However without the support of live bodies to accompany the live music, it will not last for long.
So with that in mind, I hope you all will find a little time to come out and support one or more of the Sunday gigs lined up so far. If the turn out is good, they pl… Continue
Just to review what I have been doing lately: I had a great gig last Saturday at the Duke Energy Center for Children's Hospital. It was a large event, around 500 people. We(Tim Watson, Steve Barone, and Joe Jahnigen) had a blast playing jazz standards for "older" crowd of people who didn't want to dance after dinner. Everything ran smoothly. Thank you, Cara Cross!
The following day I had a fun rehearsal with Jim Connerley's Vintage Keys group. We are at the Wisp this Friday at 8:30.
Monday and T… Continue

I'm up and dealing with Monday. This morning will be a good day for a long practice session. I still can't decide if I like the late Florida Otto link tenor mouthpiece that I have been playing for the last few weeks. I lean towards the Sig. slant link that I have been playing for that last 15 years.
I think I am going to make some blueberry coffeecake muffins this morning for Vanessa's "team" at work. Also, make some lemonade with real lemons this morning. Then after lunch, finish cleaning up th… Continue

So I am surfing the web, as I oft times do while between tasks at work, and I come across this jazz blog that gives reference to an alto player named Grace Kelly. This girl looks like on of the kids I used to teach, but if any of them had even played a quarter as well I would have been dancing in the streets. If you have time take a listen. She may be the next Chris Potter. web siteContinue

Today it's a practice day. Can't work in the yard/garden in the rain. So I will work on the Gap scale, you no the 6 note scale that is essentially two augmented triads separated by half steps. I warm-up on that for a while then randomly move onto something else. I hope everyone is well today. Now it is breakfast for me. Continue
